Why apologetics is important

We are going to look at a Biblical example of someone using apologetics in practice. In this passage Paul is talking to some people from Athens. They are philosophers v Paul wants the Athenians to become Christians. Apologetics encourages us by strengthening our faith. It equips us with answers when other people question our faith. That was we are less likely to lose our faith:.

Give the children 2 minutes to write down reasons their non-Christian friends have given as to why Christianity is not true. In that game we had to do what the leader said.

We had to obey the leaders command. God has commanded us to use apologetics so we should obey. Reasonable Faith. Whereas I found myself idling in spiritual neutral before I encountered apologetics, once I learned there were good reasons for what I believe I began to seriously study the Bible and take my role as an evangelist seriously.

The only thing it cannot be is moderately important. Apologetics helped to solidify my conviction that Christianity was true, which fueled a passion for God and His word. Study apologetics, and I guarantee it will strengthen your own faith as well! The New Testament epistles are replete with examples of the author, usually the apostle Paul, admonishing his audience to hold fast to the true Gospel and ignore false ones.

The less we know our Bible, the more likely we are to fall for unsound teachings and doctrine. Paul even admits in his letter to the church at Colossae that false teachings often have the appearance of Wisdom Colossians On the flipside however, the more we know our Bible, the less likely we are to fall for these bad ideas.

The biggest barrier that keeps Christians from sharing their faith with others is fear. Fear of not knowing what to say, fear of being unable to answer their questions, fear of looking and sounding silly.

But then what if they come back with questions? Apologetics can help there too; in fact a major part of what apologetics consists of is answering questions people have about Christianity. By anticipating these questions and learning a few good responses, your fear of being unable to answer questions while sharing your faith will shrink.

There is no shortage of excellent apologetics ministries that exist to answer questions like the ones you have. The foundation for Christian apologetics comes from many places in the Bible, but it is specifically mentioned in 1 Peter , where Peter writes the following:. Christian apologetics, then, is the practice of making a defense for what we believe as followers of Christ.

More and more, people in our culture assume that if you believe in Jesus or are a follower of Christ, you have made those decisions based on blind faith or even ignorance. Christian apologetics shows that there are reasons that make sense logically for us to believe in Jesus and follow Him today.

Christian apologetics gives confidence to those who follow Jesus that we have good, solid, logical reasons for believing what we believe. Christian apologetics gives us confidence to follow Jesus with full hearts, knowing that we can engage with people about topics of faith and know that we have a strong case. Many people, in trying to refute the claims of the Christian faith, try to assert that in order to follow Jesus you have to disengage your mind.

Christian apologetics shows that this is not true. There are reasoned, well-thought-out arguments for believing in Jesus and following Him. Sometimes followers of Jesus are portrayed as being unwilling to engage in conversation about the most important aspects of their faith.

Instead, this statement implies that no more conversation is needed or wanted because we have our beliefs settled. Christian apologetics, though, invites conversation about beliefs because of the reasons behind the beliefs. Christian apologetics is something that all followers of Jesus should engage in, at least from time to time.

However, there are certain people who may have a greater need for discussions about Christian apologetics. Remember, apologetics is just providing evidence that shows what you are saying is true.

In Galatians Paul teaches if we live by the Spirit it will bear fruit in your character by providing you with the qualities of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.

But notice that Paul does not include knowledge. Knowledge will not be given to us by the Spirit. We personally are going to have to work for knowledge.
