Can you taper jeans

They have little to no tapering at all, and may even start out wider at the ankle than anywhere else on the leg. If you have a wider frame, it can seem logical and proportional to get pants with wider legs, but a tapered cut below the knee has a lot of advantages when it comes to creating a sleek and sharp look.

For example, if you hem a pair of slim-straight jeans, the hemming process removes the bottom part of the leg with the closest taper. Stand barefoot on a hard floor in your pants that are too long and make one large cuff so that the new edge of your pant leg just grazes the floor. Head back to this post for help to figure out if your pants need hemming.

The next step happens at the tailor, unless you are handy with a sewing machine. The tailor will then pin the pant leg to demonstrate how much width to remove, and you can visually judge for yourself what you want according to your personal preference. Make sure to specify if you want the tapering only adjusted below the knee, or the entire leg.

Put your jeans on, then mark the center point of your knee by giving it a slight bend. Most people looking where to get jeans hemmed commonly seek out the nearest tailor at the neighborhood cleaners.

Unlike a traditional tailor, who mainly work on lightweight fabrics, we are jeans tailors who only work on heavier fabrics. We hem jeans with a chain-stitch at the hem, and taper jeans from the inseam, which is the proper way.

Anyone who leads you to believe it should be done from the out-seam is wrong. When performing inseam alterations, the leg opening size increases as the leg circumference gets larger the higher up you go from the bottom towards the crotch. To best keep the original look and shape a jeans design, it is best to also taper jeans if taking off more than about 3-inches.

When raising the position of the bottom, the knee position should also be raised as shown on our drawing near the top of this page. This helps keep the silhouette of the jeans as close as possible to their original intended look.
