The Church traditionally prays certain mysteries on certain days of the week, as follows:. The Joyful mysteries invite us to enter into the wonder of Jesus coming to earth as a baby. The Sorrowful mysteries help us relive the death of Jesus.
We not only remember it, but we also enter into it — we sit beside Jesus in the garden before he is arrested The Agony in the Garden. Through meditating on these events, we attempt to encounter the suffering Jesus endured for us truly.
We feel this pain and loss even more deeply as we imagine seeing it happen through the eyes of his mother. We experience the joy of the risen Christ, imagining ourselves as Mary or the first disciples The Resurrection. The last two mysteries are the only two that are not explicitly mentioned in Scripture but rather come from hundreds of years of tradition based on passages from Revelation and Song of Songs.
In these last two mysteries, we celebrate that where Mary — who Jesus has given us to be our mother — goes, we too hope to go one day The Assumption and Coronation of Mary. The deep-sea explorer and the child making sand castles on the beach can fully enjoy the same ocean while playing at different levels. And this is true with the Rosary. Just as Dr. Sri explains , the Rosary is a prayer tool for people of all ages, enduring different things, and who might have different levels of familiarity with the devotion.
So, we pray with Mary through the life of Christ to grow closer to Him. We might pray with Mary for a special intention, or we might need a moment of solace with the Blessed Mother and her Son, Jesus. Any reason to pray the Rosary is a beautiful reason. We can pray the Rosary at any time of the day or night.
I believe in God, the Father almighty, Creator of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried; He descended into hell; on the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty; from there He will come to judge the living and the dead.
The mysteries of the Rosary are based on the incidents in the life of Our Lord and His Mother that are celebrated in the Liturgy. There is a parallel between the main feasts honoring our Lord and his Mother in the liturgical year, and the twenty mysteries of the Rosary. Consequently, one who recites the twenty mysteries of the Rosary in one day reflects on the whole liturgical cycle that the Church commemorates during the course of each year.
That is why some of the Popes have referred to the Rosary as a compendium of the Gospel. One cannot change the mysteries of the Rosary without losing the indulgences that the Church grants for the recitation of the Rosary. Here is a chart:. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death, Amen. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. O my Jesus, forgive us of our sins. Save us from the fires of hell.
Lead all souls into heaven, especially those in most need of thy mercy. Hail, holy Queen, Mother of mercy, our life, our sweetness and our hope.
To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve: to thee do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this valley of tears. Turn then, most gracious Advocate, thine eyes of mercy toward us, and after this our exile, show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary! Optional Leader: Let us pray. All: O God whose only begotten Son by his life, death, and Resurrection has purchased for us the rewards of eternal life; grant we beseech thee, that meditating on these mysteries of the Most Holy Rosary of the Blessed Virgin Mary, we may imitate what they contain and obtain what they promise through the same Christ our Lord.
Leader: O Mother of the Redeemer Living Tabernacle of the Eucharist, and Luminous Rose of Heaven, with humble confidence we ask you to bestow upon the Holy Father all the graces and blessings reserved for him by the Holy Trinity from all eternity. Leader: Help his friends Leader: Saint Joseph The Glorious Mysteries are then prayed on Saturday and Sunday.
Now that the Luminous Mysteries have recently been added, the schedule is:. Try to place yourself "into" the scene of the particular mystery as you pray, imagining the sights, smells, sounds, and emotions that Jesus, Mary, Joseph, and other participants experienced during the actual events.
It is also okay to meditate on the meaning of the words of the prayers as you pray them, or even to meditate on the person for whom you are offering the Rosary. Some people offer particular intentions before each decade. You can ask God to grant you a favor, heal a sick person, or convert a sinner. Some people offer the same intention every day--sometimes for years on end--especially when asking the Father for the conversion of a particular person. Intentions are as varied as the people who pray.
Ask for big and small gifts. Be bold!
