Enid and Aaron's life is in Cyndie's hands. Daryl leads the Alexandrians to the Hilltop. With resources dwindling, Maggie faces a difficult decision. Gabriel urges Dr. Carson to have faith. Daryl makes amends to Rick. Maggie finds a crate with a mysterious note. On the road with Dwight, Simon questions Negan's plan. With Negan nowhere to be found, Simon leads an attack against the Hilltop.

A homecoming turns tense when Maggie sees Negan out and about. Later, she and Daryl catch up, but then a smoldering reveal upends all expectations. Carol won't let sleeping dogs lie as she follows Daryl into the woods on a hunt and his canine's find forces him to revisit the heartbreaking past. Tests of faith lie around each bend.
Gabriel and Aaron scope out the state of the world and stumble across supplies, as well as fresh horrors. Life toggles between the real and surreal — and escape seems achingly close — when masked troops imprison Princess, Eugene, Ezekiel and Yumiko. Feelings bruised, Daryl and Carol go their own way: In Alexandria, she tries to mend matters, and outside, he learns he left something crucial behind.
With tensions on the rise in Alexandria, Carol banishes Negan to the cabin. Alone, he looks back with anger and regret — and collects an old friend.
